"Anshan Iron & Steel Group's (Angang Group) investment in the U.S. is a commercial deal, and should not be politicized," Yao Jian, spokesman of China's Ministry of Commerce, said on Tuesday.
Some U.S. congressmen have raised obstacles for Chinese capital and products to enter the U.S., and the review of the deal on so called "national security" concerns is not inappropriate, he said.
Anshan Iron & Steel Group and the U.S.-based Steel Development Co. in May, 2010 reached an agreement to set up a joint-venture to product deformed steel bars.
On July 2, 50 congressmen called on the U.S. Treasury Department to investigate the Angang Group's investment in the U.S., claiming that the deal would threaten the employment and national security of the U.S.
Yao noted that the majority of the statesmen in the U.S. still look forward to investment from China to help create new jobs in the U.S., while a small group of people call for investigations for security reasons.
"Since the breakout of the global financial crisis, the trend of trade protectionism has been growing in the U.S.," Yao said. "This may undermine global recovery."
Yao didn't disclose whether the Chinese government will give support to Angang Group.
